ABOUT OUR SERVICES
Q: What do you specialize in?
A: While there are a number of services that we're proficient at, our main specialty is Japanese straightening. It's our premier service and what many customers come to our salon for, even across states! Our other specialty is the digital perm, which follows a different process from the Japanese straightening but uses the same chemicals on your hair.
Q: What is the Japanese straightening?
A: The Japanese straightening (or Japanese straight perm, or simply straight perm) uses chemical treatments and special flat irons to straighten and smooth your curly, wavy or frizzy hair. For the best results, it requires an experienced professional who has received specialty training in order to use the products for the perm.
Q: What products do you use for the Japanese straightening?
A: We use a product called Liscio for both the Japanese straightening and digital perm, manufactured by the Japanese company Milbon. It's not generally available to the public or even most salons; Milbon requires that salons have a license and receive training in order to purchase and use their products, and we're happy to say that we are proudly licensed by Milbon to provide the services you want!
This is an example of the Liscio products we use. The straightening lotion (red bottle) comes in three strengths: Mild, Normal and Strong, depending on your hair condition. The neutralizing lotion (white bottle) is applied to the hair after it has been flat ironed to close the hair cuticles and set the style.
Q: Will this process work on colored/bleached/highlighted hair? And can I get my hair colored/bleached/highlighted after I get the straightening done?
A: The most important consideration is the condition of your hair; it's always best to come in for a free consultation if you're not sure and want to get it checked before you spend the money. Most colored or highlighted hair can be straightened, but not all. As for coloring after the process, you can color and highlight your hair two weeks after getting the straightening done, but do consider that some coloring processes may damage the hair more than expected. It's best to use gentle products and getting only a few highlights on top rather than all over.
Q: Will this damage my hair?
A: In all honesty, basic care such as blow drying, flat ironing and even brushing your hair cause damage to it in some way. After getting the Japanese straightening, however, you won't need to use such aggressive methods to style your hair the way you want, and in turn, with proper care your hair is more likely to become healthier. Of course, any chemical treatment is going to have an effect on your hair, which is why it's best to get the process done using the most high-quality materials and most up-to-date procedures.
Q: Is the digital perm process similar to the Japanese straightening process?
A: As far as the usage of chemicals goes, yes -- there is a styling lotion applied to the hair prior to the styling process and a neutralizing lotion applied at the end to close the hair cuticles. However, instead of flat ironing your hair, we curl the hair up in special rollers that become individually heated up when attatched to a specialty machine. This results in soft, wavy, bouncy hair that's sure to turn heads! These pictures show the machines in action:
Q: How much do these processes cost?
A: See our pricing page for some rough estimates, but keep in mind, all hair is different, and the best way to get an exact price is via a free consultation.
